How Much to Tip in Cancun: Complete Tipping Guide

Jump to: 🍹 Food & Drinks 🛎️ Concierge & Staff 🚌 Tours ❓ FAQ
Quick answer: tipping is not mandatory in Cancun, but it's genuinely important. Many tourism workers rely heavily on tips, and wages in the local tourism industry are low. Use the amounts below as a minimum baseline, in pesos where possible, and tip more if service is great.

Cancun and the surrounding area has a high poverty rate, with many full-time workers earning under $300 USD a month. A large share of the people serving you throughout your trip, bartenders, servers, housekeeping, drivers, rely on tips as a real part of their income. Anyone who serves you honestly and well deserves a tip.

The amounts below are a minimum baseline for two people, not a hard rule. Tip more if you'd like, or less if you genuinely can't afford it or the service was poor, tipping is appreciated but never mandatory. Amounts are shown in both USD and MXN (pesos), using an approximate rate of $1 USD ≈ $17 MXN, check our Currency guide for the current rate before your trip.

One important rule of thumb: if you're at a restaurant, even inside an all-inclusive resort, and prices are listed next to menu items, tip 10-20% of that listed total just like you would at any restaurant back home.
